Lola Jean the Spelling Machine

I am so incredibly proud of our daughter, Lola Jean. ♥️

Lola is FIERCELY competitive in everything she does — from running and kart racing to spelling bees.

Earlier this year, Lola was heartbroken to learn that, despite WINNING her class’s 5th grade spelling bee, she was ineligible to advance to the regional bee, because I am an employee of the E.W. Scripps Company — which produces the National Spelling Bee.

Lola winning her 5th grade spelling bee!

Fast forward to today… knowing full well that she would be unable to advance in the competition if she won, this morning, Lola competed in her school’s 6th grade spelling bee — and WON. Again.

Lola graciously informed the runner-up that SHE would be the one advancing to the regional bee, since Lola is ineligible to do so. When I dropped her off at school this morning, Lola told me “even if I can’t advance, Dad, I’ll still know that I won.” And then? She did.

I couldn’t be more proud of Lola and the patience, perseverance and sportsmanship she displayed this morning. Lola (and her siblings) are MY reason for not giving up — and the inspiration for PSNeverGiveUp.

Lola truly embodies the spirit of the movement she inspired — and as her father, I couldn’t be more proud of my special girl.

Congratulations on you big win, Lola Jean! You are a true inspiration to all of us — showing exemplary sportsmanship, and proving that, if you put in the time and effort and focus on what you really want, there’s nothing that you can’t do. I love you, my bella principessa. ♥️
