You Can Come Back from This

To anyone who’s ever been in “that place” — who’s ever felt like giving up — listen to this song. 🎧

Back in 2020, at the height of the “pandemic,” I once again found myself at a crossroads. We had spent nearly a decade building a life in Central Ohio. When we moved to Columbus in 2011 for me to anchor Good Day Columbus, we had NO IDEA what lay in store for us: our infertility struggles, my surgeries, burglaries, changing jobs and TV stations, the birth of our children… the defining moments that make a life.

We had just rebuilt our home in Pickerington, Ohio — after a tree practically destroyed it in July 2019. After surviving six and a half months in adjoining hotel rooms in downtown Columbus — we were finally settling back in.

There were riots in downtown Columbus — the hotel where Nico had spent roughly 1/3 of his young life was severely damaged. All three kids (who were six, four and two at the time) were home from school. It was a crazy time, to say the least.

We — like everyone else — were isolated from our friends and family. The station had just been sold, and everyone was on edge. It was not a happy time. I had never really felt welcomed there to begin with, and the change in ownership — and the changing nature of the business itself — really made me think. “What are we doing?” “Why are we doing this?”

That’s when I came up with initial idea for PSNeverGiveUp.

It was also around this time, I interviewed my longtime friend Eliot Sloan — lead singer of Blessid Union of Souls. It had been 25 years since the band released their anthemic song “I Believe.” The song’s chorus once again resonated with a country that seemed like it was being torn apart.  “I believe… that LOVE is the answer. I believe… LOVE WILL FIND A WAY.”

After my story aired, I saw that Blessid Union had released THIS song:  “You Can Come Back from This.”

It’s hard to put into words what I felt the first time I heard it. My initial reaction was emotional, physical — and spiritual. The memories of all we had gone through over the past ten years or so came flooding back. I sat there, in my home studio, and cried. I listened to it over and over and over again.

If there was ever a song that fully embraces the spirit of what it means to NEVER GIVE UP, it’s this one.

No matter what you’re going through, no matter how hard or hopeless it might seem — YOU CAN come back from this. You just need one thing: FAITH.

I firmly believe that God brings certain people into your life for a reason, and that there’s no such thing as “coincidences.” I’m glad that God has blessed Eliot and his bandmates with immeasurable talent — and that they have chosen to share that gift with us.

I guess I’m just grateful. Grateful for friendship. Grateful for music. My family. My life.

So if you’re in “that place” right now, just remember — you can come back from this. 🙏♥️
